The ParaFishControl consortium gathers 29 partners comprising public and private partners with crosscutting complementary skills from 13 European countries: Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) is the national research and advisory body for marine aquaculture, fisheries and the environment. It participates with the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IMBBC), established in 2012, by merging two of the Institutes of HCMR at that time, namely the Institute of Marine Biology and Genetics and the Institute of Aquaculture. The IMBBC has land-based aquaculture facilities in Athens and Crete and near-shore aquaculture facilities in Crete. Well-equipped laboratories undertake research in reproductive endocrinology, spawning induction, larval rearing, developmental biology, nutrition, physiology, feeding behaviour, fish health and product quality. The HCMR also operates a state-of-the-art genetic lab and has a long-standing experience in the transformation of the accumulated knowledge to applicable technologies and the development of molecular markers and genetic tools for different aquaculture aspects. The involved HCMR experts hold amongst others specific expertise in fish microbiology, pharmacokinetics & therapy, advanced diagnosis, genomics.

Role in the project:

HCMR contributes to WP1 (in the transcriptome characterization of the monogenean Sparicotyle chrysophrii (Task 1.2) in order to determine key genes of the species and on comparative approaches for species belonging to the same taxonomic group), WP2 (to develop RAD markers for the study of the population structure in S. chrysophrii and the isopod Ceratothoa oestroides and resolve wild-farmed interactions in the species (Task 2.1), WP5 (to evaluate the oral administration of caprylic acid in combination with iron and immunostimulants against S. chrysophrii infections in gilthead sea bream and evaluate the use of plant extracts against Enteromyxum leei in sharpsnout sea bream  (Task 5.1), WP7 (to participate in surveillance of marine fish species (parasites infection risk) (Task 7.1) and critical selection of the more suitable and cost effective monitoring methodologies) and in WP8.

Key persons involved:

GRigos  Dr. Georgios Rigos, Senior Researcher, is the scientific responsible for HCMR in the project. He has long experience in fish pharmacology, various aspects of pathology and alternative therapeutic methods. He has participated in EU projects as Institute leader and currently coordinating national projects and WPs concerning alternative treatments in aquaculture and parasitic diseases of new farmed species. 55 publications in peer-reviewed journals are included in his scientific achievements. 
  Dr. Pantelis Katharios is an Associate Researcher working since 2004 in HCMR. His main field is the study of fish disease with emphasis on the Mediterranean species. He has published 32 articles in peer reviewed journals and he is the coordinator of several national and EU projects on fish diseases.
  Dr. Constantinos Tsigenopoulos is a Senior Researcher with an expertise on genetic improvement in aquaculture. He is interested also in comparative genomics and the introduction of genomic approaches in aquaculture practices. He has published 56 articles in peer reviewed journals, participated in several EU projects as scientific responsible and has coordinated national projects.
