The researchers at the Faculty of Health and Medical sciences, University of Copenhagen, have a long tradition for investigating, diagnosing and controlling diseases in wild and cultured fish. Main strategies have been to build up systems for integrated control of parasitic diseases involving management, improving hygiene, immunoprophylaxis and vaccination.

Role in the project:

KU is leader of the parasite field Ichthyophthirius but contribute with expertise to diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of other problematic diseases including sea lice, Saprolegnia and zoonotic parasites (nematodes and flukes). KU contributes to WP1, WP3, WP4, WP5, WP7 and WP8.

Key persons involved:

Kurt  Dr. Kurt Buchmann is the leader of the Laboratory of Aquatic Pathobiology currently employing 18 researchers. He has been in charge of research school SCOFDA (Sustainable Control of Fish Diseases in Aquaculture) for 13 years and the Danish Fish Immunology Research Centre DAFINET for five years. He has 30 years of experience in fish pathology and fish immunology which has led to production of more than 200 scientific papers and several books and book chapters. KB has focus on both protozoan and metazoan fish parasites. He has a large experience in EU-projects (FP4, FP5, FP6 and FP7 programmes).
PerKania Dr. Per W. Kania is employed as associate professor and focus on gene expression techniques and sequencing.
Louise  Postdoc Louise von Gersdorff Jørgensen is a fish parasitologist developing an antiparasitic vaccine based on novel molecular techniques.
Jiwan Postdoc Jiwan Kumar Chettri is an expert within fish vaccines and experimental fish models with focus on early developmental stages of fish.
Jakob Postdoc Jakob Skov is working on vaccine production and development with main focus on antiprotozoan and antibacterial immunoprophylaxis. He has extensive experience with regard to beta-glucans and their immune enhancing effects. He is a highly experienced fish parasitologist with focus on zoonotic helminths in farmed fish.
