The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is the oldest university in Western Europe. Nowadays, it still remains one of the most important institutions of higher education across Europe with 11 Schools, 33 Departments and about 87.000 students. The University places special emphasis on the excellence in education and research: the community of teaching, technical and administrative staff counts more than 5900 people; activities are related to 212 Degree Programmes, 40 International degree programmes, 53 PhD programmes, 50 specialisation schools, 61 first and second level professional master's programmes. At National level UNIBO ranks second for competitive research funding from the Italian Government. On the European side, Unibo is member of the major European Networks and stakeholders thematic groups, such as the European and National Technology Platforms, and is the first Italian university for the attractiveness of European funding for research (projects funded in 2007-2012), 31st in the European ranking of institutions of higher education. The research group of UNIBO involved in the present proposal is from the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences (DIMEVET), which has as primary overall activities education, research and services. The UNIBO team has a long term research expertise on fish parasitology and mycology, diagnosis and epidemiology of fish diseases, fish-borne zoonoses and genomics.

Role in the project:

UNIBO is involved in most of the WPs, with main contribution to research on Saprolegnia parasitica and zoonotic helminths, mainly Diphyllobothriidae and Opisthorchiidae. UNIBO is task leader of WP4.3 “Diagnostic tools, markers and tests for quantitative identification and discrimination of parasites genotypes and phenotypes” and WP7.2 “Surveillance of freshwater fish species (parasites infection risk)”. Furthermore UNIBO contributes to validation of diagnostic methods, epidemiological data collection on marine fish parasites and development of actions/documents aimed at improving the image of aquaculture food products.

Key persons involved:

marialetizia  Prof. Marialetizia Fioravanti, head of the Fish Pathology Laboratory of DIMEVET-UNIBO, has 25 years of research experience in animal and human parasitology, mainly fish parasitic diseases and fish-borne zoonoses. She has co-authored over 90 scientific papers and book chapters. She has led and participated in many national projects on fish diseases and fish-borne parasitic zoonoses and has led the UNIBO research group involved as a partner in BOMOSA EU 6th FP. 
roberta  Dr. Roberta Galuppi, head of the Mycology Laboratory of DIMEVET-UNIBO, has 24 years of research experience on pathogenic fungi and oomycetes, and animal parasites. Research activities includes development and application of “in vitro” test to assess the effectiveness of natural and synthetic drugs against mycetes and parasites. She has co-authored over 50 scientific paper. She participated in many national projects performing multidisciplinary studies on parasitic and fungal diseases of animals.   
monica  Dr. Monica Caffara, researcher at DIMEVET-UNIBO, has 19 years of research experience, mainly on molecular diagnosis of fish and zoonotic parasites. She has co-authored over 50 scientific papers. She participated in many research projects on fish diseases and fish-borne parasitic zoonoses.  
Andrea  Dr. Andrea Gustinelli, works at the Fish Pathology Lab of DIMEVET-UNIBO since 13 years and has research experience in animal and human parasitology, fish diseases and fish-borne parasitic zoonoses. He has co-authored over 50 scientific papers and has participated in many research projects on fish pathology and fish-borne parasitic zoonoses.
