Skretting Aquaculture Research Centre A/S (SKRET) is the global research organization for Skretting with the goal of ensuring that the world’s leading fish and shrimp feed producer maintains its position at the forefront of the rapidly developing aquaculture industry.
The research centre is based in Stavanger, Norway, and has further research units in Italy, Spain, China and Japan. Skretting ARC employs an international team of highly skilled specialists, supported by a substantial annual investment in advanced R&D. In addition, Skretting ARC collaborates with several institutes and private companies across the globe. Core competencies are within nutrition, health, feed production and research methodologies. It performs research for all feed companies within Skretting in the world. On a global basis, Skretting produces more than 1.8 million tonnes of fish and shrimp feed.
It is a legal entity owned 100% by Skretting AS. Its annual report may be found in the Norwegian authorities’ website http://www.brreg.no. Skretting is owned by the Dutch company Nutreco B.V., a global leader in animal nutrition and fish feed, employing about 7,500 people worldwide. The Nutreco family has several research centres in the field of animal nutrition and ingredients.
In Norway, ARC’s facilities include an extensive research station with hatchery and land based tanks with both fresh and seawater trial facilities, a pilot plant for test feed production and innovative process trials and a well-equipped modern laboratory. The research station is designed for running trials with salmonids through all life stages with different water qualities (temperature and salinity). These facilities are located within the vicinity of Stavanger, Norway. In addition, feed developments for freshwater trout are assessed at our trial station in northern Italy. With regard to sea bass and sea bream and other species in the Mediterranean, trials are conducted in different institutes in the region, coordinated by the research unit in Spain. In Asia, facilities for yellowtail kingfish and red sea bream are available together with the Kagoshima University in Japan. A shrimp research centre is located in the vicinity of Skretting China in the Guangzhou region.
Skretting ARC has participated in several Norwegian Research Council and EU-funded research projects over the years. Its researchers have been authors or co-authors of several scientific publications.
Role in the project:
Skretting ARC will participate in WP4 and will have a transversal participation in other WPs. ARC has facilities for production of experimental diets using commercially relevant resources.
Key persons involved:
Dr. Charles McGurk (M) is the manager of the Fish Health Department of Skretting ARC. He is a veterinarian and research scientist. His PhD and post-doc projects (at University of Stirling) focused on myxozoans, with relevance to life cycles and control strategies. At Skretting ARC, he leads a department of 8 researchers who focus on optimising aquatic animal health through dietary means.
